butterfly effect

2016 acrylic on stone

17×26×33cm

With this piece I hope to get the viewer to make a direct, unconscious connection to the

landscape. The butterfly, carved out of stone, represents the eternal, while the landscape

painted on the wings represents the ephemeral. The Tohoku earthquake compelled me to

create this piece. The deformed, somewhat monstrous antennae represent the effects of

the radiation from the Fukushima reactor. The antennae go all the way around and form

the base of the sculpture. If you look closely at the antennae, you can see that the bumps

represent the dorsal fins on Godzilla’s back. On the butterfly's wings is a painting of my

hometown in Gifu. I hope that this landscape will never change.
